On 6 November 2019, Mr. Vladimir Andreichenko, the Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, held a meeting with Mr. Einars Semanis, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to the Republic of Belarus.
The Chairman of the House of Representatives congratulated
the Ambassador on the occasion of the beginning of his diplomatic mission to
Mr. Vladimir Andreichenko noted the high level of political
relations between the both countries and expressed the interest of the Belarusian
side in strengthening good neighborhood relations and mutually beneficial
cooperation with Latvia. The both sides expressed satisfaction with the systematic
nature of the contacts between the parliaments of the both countries aimed at
supporting unifying initiatives within the framework of international
organizations, such as initiatives by the Belarusian head of state on starting a
new Helsinki process and creating a digital good neighborhood belt, the
implementation of which will contribute to strengthening confidence and
security in the region. The Belarusian side also confirmed its interest in
receiving the status of observer at the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference.
From his part, Mr. Einars Semanis emphasized the sincerity and good neighborhood nature of the bilateral relations and the fruitful development of inter-parliamentary cooperation.
The both sides expressed an opinion that priority areas of partnership
between the two countries should include transport and logistics, in
particular, the transshipment of cargo through Latvian ports and the use of
transport corridors of Belarus and Latvia.
During the meeting the parties discussed issues of cooperation in trade, economic and humanitarian areas. They confirmed their interest in such issues as exchange trade, e-commerce and e-health, ICT, tourism and ecology and agreed to promote further strengthening of interregional ties. Furthermore, the sides exchanged their views on the preparation for the Ice Hockey World Championship, which Belarus and Latvia will co-host in 2021.
The sides expressed their intention to keep expending their parliamentary cooperation in various levels, including the level of the heads of legislative bodies.
The meeting was attended by the deputy chairperson of the Standing Commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus on International Affairs Ms. Olga Popko, deputy chairperson of the Standing Commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus on National Security Mr. Sergei Bobrikov.
